Opus 5: Episode 2: Classical Wellness

Op. 5, Episode 2 begins the first of three episodes in a new format, full-length interviews. We recorded great interviews with three fantastic guests, and we decided to share these unabridged conversations as complete episodes.

We begin these guest interviews with cellist Jalayne Mitchell. Jalayne is a former student of ours, who we mentored in the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra when she was in high school. Five years later, she finished an undergraduate degree in music performance at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland and has become an innovative musical entrepreneur.

Jalayne MitchellAs a student, Jalayne began Classical Wellness as a way to learn more about herself and share with others in similar performance-based journeys. Jalayne says, “Classical Wellness is a space created by musicians and for musicians to integrate more mental wellness into our music lives, so we can do the work that is required of us without sacrificing our basic needs.” Jalayne has created a fantastic set of resources for sale on her website. Look into her Practice Toolkits and Mental Preparation for Performance Guide.

Classical Wellness also has a very active social media presence on Instagram, @ClassicalWellness. The Classical Wellness profile has a community of nearly 60,000 followers, as of this writing. Follow the account to access this incredible resource that Jalayne has created!

A huge thanks to Jalayne for sharing your time with us! We are so proud to see who you’ve become since we first met you eight years ago as a high school student! And best of luck to you on your new journey, studying at Rice University!
